#Biafra: Court Refuses To Quash Charges Against Nnamdi Kanu, Others

Nnamdi-Kanu, Biafra
The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has on Monday refused to quash the six-count treason charge the federal government leveled against the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mr. Nnamdi Kanu.
The presiding judge of the trial, Justice John Tsoho, in his ruling, equally allowed the prosecution to shield the identity of eight witnesses that are scheduled to testify against Kanu and two other pro-Biafra supporters, Benjamin Madubugwu and David Nwawuisi.
The court declined to discharge and acquit Kanu, Madubugwu and Nwawuisi as it was prayed to do by the defence lawyer, Chief Chuks Muoma, SAN.

The court’s ruling followed a plot uncovered by the Department of State Service, DSS, alleging that some pro-Biafra agitators were planning to invade the court and forcefully free the defendants.
Meanwhile, the embattled leader of IPOB, has filed an $800m suit against the Federal Government at the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS court sitting in Abuja for violation of his human rights.
In the suit, which was filed through his legal team, Hon. Ifeanyi Ejiofor Esq. and Chinwe C. Umeche on March 2, 2016, Mr Kanu sought that the court declares that his arrest and detention since October 14, 2015, despite several order of court granting him bail, is unlawful.
The detained leader is also seeking declaration of the ECOWAS court saying his continued incarceration constitutes a breach of Nigerian’s human rights obligations under the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights; the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, and other International Human Rights Treaties to which Nigeria is a party.
