Whether
you enjoy your smoothies as a meal or a snack, there are certain weird
things you can add to them that can pick your day full with nutrients.
More so, smoothies are a good way for you to become creative and bring
all those weird thoughts to play. You can try out different flavours and
experiment. Here, are a number of weird things you can add in your
smoothie to get a different but sweet taste.
Avocado
If you haven’t tried avocado in your smoothies yet, you’re in for a treat. The healthy fat avocados provide when paired with nutrient packed fruits and vegetables, help the body absorb fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, and K) better.
More so, it will make your smoothies look really creamy, giving it a milkshake consistency. You can combine your avocado with tropical fruits for a delicious treat. If you are having problems with your avocado getting ripe, you can buy a few extra and then when they hit the sweet spot, scoop out the flesh and store in sealed bags or container in the freezer.
It is best to freeze single portions. By doing so, you won’t be trying to hack off pieces of rock-solid, ice-cold avocado to break off the amount you want. All you have to do when you’re ready to make your smoothie is throw in your frozen avocado and blend away.
Beets
Beets have a mildly earthy sweet taste that blends really well with other flavours. They also contain loads of antioxidants and have been known for their anti-inflammatory benefits due to the betalain they contain which is the pigment that gives beets their bright red colour.
For you to have a properly blended smoothie, blend, steam and roast the beets first and slice them before throwing them in the blender. You can also buy them pre-cooked, just as you have a number of fresh and frozen varieties to choose from.
Cauliflower
Frozen cauliflower actually gives a creamy consistency without any of that funky cauliflower taste. This is because it’s white and it doesn’t change the colour of your drink. Cauliflower can be termed a superfood as it contains huge amounts of antioxidants, B-vitamins, potassium, and fiber.
Furthermore, it is also a good way for you to add extra vegetables into your smoothie if you’re the type that’s not only into spinach.
Citrus peels
This is perhaps the weirdest yet but you can actually add citrus peels to your smoothie. Citrus peels add a burst of flavour to the smoothie and they also contain loads of fibers and vitamin C. More so, the peels contain potent phytochemicals like flavonoids, carotenoids, and limonene. The only thing you have to do, is wash them well before tossing them in your smoothie blend.
Pumpkin
Pumpkin are a great addition to your smoothies because they lend a pleasing, creamy texture and a ton of vitamins like A and C, plus potassium and filling fiber. The pumpkin flavour is almost undetectable, and you can almost get all the benefits of a vegetable!
